Sciatica – What’s Really Going On?

Ever felt a deep ache, tingling, or weakness running down your leg? Maybe your healthcare provider told you, “Oh, that’s sciatica!” But here’s the thing, sciatica isn’t a diagnosis, it’s a symptom! Like a cough signals a cold, sciatica points to an underlying issue. So, what’s causing it? And how do you fix the root problem instead of just masking the pain?

Sciatica can stem from a herniated disc, spinal stenosis (narrowing), joint irritation, or muscle imbalance, not just a “trapped nerve.” If your healthcare provider simply labels it “sciatica” without a thorough exam to rule out more serious causes like fractures, tumors, or spondylolisthesis, you may not be getting the full picture. While rare, these conditions can mimic "sciatica" and shouldn’t be overlooked! Your healthcare provider cant possibly create a care plan if they are using the term "sciatica" rather than an actual diagnosis.

Many still turn to painkillers first, but did you know NHS guidelines recommend manual therapy (like spinal adjustments, massage, and movement-based treatments) for managing low back pain, with or without sciatica? Yet, GPs often prescribe Ibuprofen, Naproxen, codeine, or steroids instead. 🤷🏻‍♂️

We could dive into medication side effects, but let’s save that for another day! What’s clear is that chiropractic care, spinal manipulation, and corrective exercise are proven to be more effective than just taking pills. Who’d have thought fixing the root problem works better than numbing it? 😆

So, the real question is: do you want lasting relief, or just a temporary fix? Breaking the cycle takes effort, but taking control of your health is the only way forward. 💪

Let’s get to the root of the problem, your body will thank you! 🚀
